NAACP to address jail population

When the state NAACP met in Cobb County last week, it talked about the high rate of black males in Georgia prisons and consider a response to Gov. Sonny Perdue's proposal to link SAT scores to the HOPE scholarship.
State NAACP President Walter Butler said the 61st annual convention, which ran through Sunday, would discuss everything from minority education to job training and voter registration. Butler said one of the most pressing issues is the high incarceration rate of black men.
In August, 61 percent of male inmates in Georgia prisons were non-white, according to the Georgia Department of Corrections. The agency could not say precisely what percentage of the non-white group was African-American.
"We have a lot of kids who are going from the schoolhouse to the jailhouse," said Butler, a Madison resident. "It's beginning to be a huge problem for us. We want to address it."
Butler said the organization plans to respond to Perdue's proposal to add a minimum SAT score to the B-average requirement to earn a HOPE scholarship.
"We will have to look at the governor's proposal more closely," Butler said.
