Alabama prison system ending segregation of HIV-positive inmates |

MONTGOMERY, Alabama --- The Alabama Department of Corrections has ended the policy of segregating HIV-positive inmates at Julia Tutwiler Prison for Women, Commissioner Kim Thomas said today. Thomas said eight HIV-positive female inmates were moved back into the general inmate population as of Aug. 1. The department plans to do the same with male inmates next year, Thomas said. The changes are the result of a lawsuit filed by HIV-positive inmates in 2011. The lawsuit asserted that the segregation policy violated the rights of the HIV-positive inmates under the Americans with Disabilities Act. A trial was held last September and October. Read More. |
