Some inmates to receive flu vaccine

A small number of high-risk Texas prison inmates will receive flu vaccinations over the next two weeks, prison officials said last Friday.
The Texas Department of Criminal Justice has 1,100 vaccines reserved for inmates with chronic heart disease, kidney disease, HIV or AIDS. Doctors also will administer the vaccines to inmates over age 65 and to pregnant women, department spokeswoman Michelle Lyons said.
Ms. Lyons said the University of Texas Medical Branch, which provides medical treatment to inmates, receives some flu vaccines every year. The number of inmates who will receive the vaccine this year is less than 1 percent of the system's 150,775 inmates.
"This population is incarcerated, but at the same time it is our duty to make sure their health needs are taken care of," Ms. Lyons said. "You are talking about a prison where you have a number of people living close together. This is not the type of epidemic we want to break out."
