Food Costs Soar in Overcrowded County Jail |

BENTON, AR -- The Saline County jail needs emergency money to help fund rising food costs that stem from overcrowding. For months, the jail has had an average of 60 inmates over budget to feed and medicate and since officials don't see any relief in numbers coming anytime soon they're hoping for financial help. “I checked last week and we were averaging 220 per day,” Lt. Scott Courtney says. Saline County's detention center is one of many across the state overflowing with inmates and dealing with additional costs. “Toiletries, toilet paper, food costs, it’s all going up,” Courtney says.
