Inmate Death under Investigation |

The Connecticut Department of Correction and the Connecticut State Police are investigating the apparent suicide of an inmate at the Hartford Correction Center At approximately 8:02 p.m. on Friday September 13, 2013 correctional staff conducting routine tours observed an inmate unresponsive in his cell with a ligature tied around his neck. He was the only inmate in the cell at the time of the incident. Correctional and medical staff immediately initiated emergency and life saving measures. The inmate was transported to St. Francis Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 8:46 p.m. The inmate is identified as 31-year-old John Matthew Tyhurst from Pearl City, Hawaii. He was an unsentenced inmate with pending charges of Employing a Minor in an Obscene Performance. Inmate Tyhurst had been incarcerated at the Hartford Correctional Center since July 30, 2013. The exact manner and cause of death will be determined by the State Medical Examiner’s Office. |
