The following are recent high-profile abuse cases or allegations involving the Alabama Department of Corrections: Tutwiler Prison The U.S. Department of Justice’s National Institute of Corrections found a multitude of problems at the Julia Tutwiler Prison for Women, including a failure to report sexual abuse of inmates and a culture of “intimidation and undue harshness.” The NIC spent three days in the prison last fall. Prison Commissioner Kim Thomas requested the assessment after the Equal Justice Initiative released a 2012 report that found corrections employees had illegal sexual contact with dozens of women at the Wetumpka facility.
