Privatizing can trim state prison costs |

More than 20 percent, or $2 billion, of Michigan’s general fund budget is locked up paying for high prison operating costs. But recent privatization efforts have the state headed in the right direction. Officials should continue to explore outsourcing and streamlining the department to free more tax dollars for use in other areas. The most recent success is privatizing prison food service. Philadelphia-based Aramark Corp won a three-year contract by bidding $64 million to provide daily meals for the state’s approximately 43,300 prisoners.
