Inmates help direct traffic at auto accident scene

Motorists driving on the Ramona Expressway near the San Jacinto River bridge in the Lakeview, Calif. area were treated to an unusual sight last Wednesday morning: a crew of inmates in orange jumpsuits directing traffic around an accident.
The inmates were part of a work crew from the Bautista Conservation Camp in Hemet.
"They just happened to be a crew bus heading to a job site," Riverside County Fire Engineer Ken Meinke said by phone. "They ended up being the first on scene."
The accident involved a single vehicle, he said. California Highway Patrol Officer Jim Whitney said he did not have immediate details about the accident.
The driver was taken to Riverside County Regional Medical Center in Moreno Valley, Meinke said.
The inmate crew normally works on emergency incidents and projects for the California Department of Forestry, U.S. Forest Service, Valley Wide Parks and Recreation District and the Metropolitan Water District.
A CDF fire captain supervises the crew, but directing traffic isn't something they normally do, Meinke said.
