Outgoing Nebraska corrections head defends agency |

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — The outgoing head of Nebraska's prison system defended his agency on Monday in the wake of several high-profile crimes committed by inmates in work-release programs and by inmates who had been discharged after their sentences ended. Bob Houston, 63, retired Monday as director of the Nebraska Department of Correctional Services, a position he had held since 2005. The most recent case involved Nikko Jenkins, who is suspected of killing four people in the Omaha area shortly after he was released from prison July 30. Authorities say Jenkins had threatened violence while incarcerated, and had pleaded with state officials to commit him to a mental health institution. In August, prison inmates Lucius Turner and Gilbert McCabe were charged with robbing a Beatrice bank while on work release. Authorities say McCabe, a convicted murderer, held up a teller at a Pinnacle Bank branch office. Read More. |
