A Turkish government official said last Thursday that the riot in the Buca prison in the western city of Izmir has ended with several people injured, the semi-official Anatolia News Agency reported. "The uprising has ended and prisoners released the three prison guards they were keeping hostage. The prison warden and officials are going to enter the prison soon," said Hamdi Yildirim, member ofthe Izmir Bar Executive Board. Meanwhile, officials announced that seven people were injured in the turbulence. The riot burst out early last Thursday when some inmates set fire to their beds and sheets, demanding better prison conditions and humane treatment. Three officers were taken hostage by the inmates. Firefighters then entered the cellblocks and put out the fire. Turkish security forces were also mobilized and have taken necessary measures to cope with the situation. |
