Luncheon to focus on relationship between mentally ill, criminal justice system |

Metrocare Services, the largest nonprofit provider of behavioral health services in Dallas, will focus on the relationship between the mentally ill and the criminal justice system at its fundraising luncheon Wednesday at the Belo Mansion. At this year’s Meal for the Minds, author Pete Earley will speak about how people with mental illness often suffer confinement instead of getting care. Earley is a former Washington Post reporter who wrote Crazy: A Father’s Search Through America’s Mental Health Madness. “We are very pleased that Mr. Earley will talk about what he’s learned during his journey to try to help his mentally ill son and how we, as a community, can provide the treatment and support these individuals truly deserve,” said Dr. John Burruss, chief executive of Metrocare Services. “More than 360,000 individuals are currently incarcerated in American jails for committing crimes linked to their illnesses,” Earley said. “I’m thankful to Metrocare for addressing the stigma behind mental illness and the dire need for decent public mental health care that can improve the lives of our sons and daughters.” Texas has nearly eight times as many people with serious mental illness in prison as it does in psychiatric hospitals, according to a recent study by the Treatment Advocacy Center and the National Sheriffs’ Association.
