Jason Mascione was not sure what day of the week or what time it happened, but he said he does remember former prison officer Eileen Mayfield grabbing his buttocks while he was incarcerated at Montgomery County's (Pa.) prison between 1999 and 2000. Mascione, one of two former inmates who charge Mayfield had indecent contact with them at the prison, admitted at her trial last Wednesday that his memory is not as good as it was when he testified at a preliminary hearing in January 2001. Defense attorney Jeffrey A. Sigman needled Mascione for nearly two hours about discrepancies in the statements he made to police, what he testified to at the preliminary hearing and what he said last Wednesday. Mascione told police that Mayfield grabbed his buttocks on a Tuesday in September, but said at the preliminary hearing it occurred on a Friday in October. "I'm not lying," said Mascione, of Philadelphia. "I just don't remember [the day or time of day]. I know what happened." The other former inmate, Jasper DiSanto, who claims Mayfield rubbed up against him on several occasions in the prison, testified for most of the afternoon before the prosecution rested its case. Mayfield, 44, of Norristown, is charged with two counts of institutional sexual assault. She faces probation to three months in jail on each count if convicted, according to state sentencing guidelines. |
