Two federal inmates who escaped from a South Texas detention facility in August were captured last Wednesday near Laredo, officials said. Authorities said $20,000 in rewards will be paid to the citizens who tipped them off. "These two gentlemen were found hiding in a closet. They were not out living the good life," said Deputy U.S. Marshal Timothy Hughes. The men were among five inmates who fled a Frio County lockup Aug. 6, possibly with the help of the Mexican Mafia. One of the escapees was caught shortly after the escape. The two who remain on the loose are presumed to be in South Texas, officials said. "This investigation will continue until justice is served," U.S. Marshal LaFayette Collins said. Several people accused of sheltering the fugitives were arrested along with the escapees in a raid about 6:30 a.m. last Wednesday in Rio Bravo, about 10 miles south of Laredo, Hughes said. A single loaded weapon was found in the house, he added. Three San Antonio residents accused of aiding the escape were arrested last month. Two are charged with driving the five men away from the privately run jail, and one is accused of harboring at least four of them in her San Antonio home. The "Frio Five" were able to flee the jail through holes cut in security fences, possibly with outside assistance. An investigation continues into whether they had inside help. Hughes said the inmates' capture "reminds us to keep focused on not only the two remaining ones but the people who created the atmosphere that enabled these people to escape." |
