Inmates indicted after jail riot

A grand jury met last Wednesday and indicted 11 Cameron County (Texas) jail inmates with third-degree felony criminal mischief for their alleged involvement in an Aug. 20 jail riot.
The inmates are accused of starting a riot in which they used broomsticks and metal shanks to fend off officers for more than an hour until they were subdued by tear gas.
The men were allegedly retaliating for being placed in lockdown after at least one of them severely beat fellow inmate Jose Loredo six days earlier. Loredo remains in a coma.
Cameron County Sheriff's Capt. Rumaldo Rodriguez said all the indicted inmates remain in custody.
The assault on Loredo, he said, is still under investigation and the Sheriff's Department is in contact with the district attorney's office to determine how many of the 11 men will be charged for the beating.
Rodriguez said some of the inmates could face charges even if they did not directly participate in the incident.
The indictment said the inmates caused between $20,000 and $100,000 in damages to the Carrizalez-Rucker Detention Center.
