BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - The Kern County Probation Department Incident Review Board considered the use of force by Deputy Probation Officer Stacy Crawford in an officer-involved shooting September 16. The board determined the use of force by Officer Crawford was within Probation Department policy. On September 16, Probation Officers went to a residence in McFarland to check on 24-year-old Stephen Espinoza, who they believed was in possession of a shotgun. As the probation officers approached the residence, they saw another probationer, 23-year-old Jesse Sanchez, run into the residence. Sanchez tried to flee from the officers and was caught, officials said. The probation officers discovered Stephen Espinoza hiding in the closet of the northwest bedroom. Crawford ordered Espinoza to show his hands, he refused to comply and turned toward the officer who believed Espinoza was armed with a firearm, officials said. Crawford fired one round toward Espinoza, who was not injured. Eventually, Espinoza surrendered and was taken into custody, officials said. Officers found a loaded .22 caliber semi-automatic handgun and a loaded 12-gauge shotgun with a pistol grip, as well as ballistic body armor inside the home. Read More. |
