| New Community Corrections facility to open Oct. 1 |

La PORTE — On Oct. 1, the inmates at La Porte County Community Corrections will be moving to a facility with more than four times the space and more than twice as many beds and accommodations as their current location. That’s when the new 22,000 square foot facility, located at 0368 S. Zigler Road in La Porte, opens for operations, and ends a two year long project and $5 million investment by the county. During an open house on Tuesday, La Porte County Community Corrections Executive Director Dick Buell said the new facility will fit a maximum of 168 inmates, and feature the addition of three classrooms for learning, double the laundry facilities and separate day-lounge areas for men and women. The current facility can only house 64 inmates, and has no classroom space and no day-lounge areas for women. “There is no comparison between this and our old facility,” Buell said. But it will also be divided into seven dorm rooms, six for men and one for women, which allows inmates to be separated based on their risk level (low, medium, high). Currently all the men are crowded into one room, while a smaller room is reserved for the women. Twenty-four inmates will be kept in each dorm room. Buell said there will be 30 individuals on staff, including administrators, with at least three officers on duty during the day. Based on future numbers, he said staffing may need to be increased. And inmates will be expected to supply their own food. He said inmates just out of jail will still get three meals a day from the jail, but once they get jobs they will have to buy their own.
