WDOC Director Robert Lampert was the ceremony’s keynote speaker. In his remarks Lampert encouraged the graduates to always strive for excellence in their careers as corrections professionals.

Also speaking at the ceremony was Training Academy Manager Pete Norris, who thanked the graduates’ family members and friends for their support, noting how difficult it can be for students to be away from their family for an extended period of time.

The WDOC basic training program is a demanding and comprehensive 10 week course which follows a curriculum necessary for Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) certification required by the department. The course is comprised of 360 hours of classroom training and one week of job shadowing for those staff going on to be correctional officers.

A majority of staff new to the Department participate in the first week of training. Non-uniform staff hired to work at one of the institutions attend the first five weeks, which includes extensive training in communications skills, de-escalation techniques, departmental policy, constitutional rights and the legal system. Correctional officers continue their education for an additional five weeks with hands on training on subjects such as the use of restraints, defensive tactics, report writing, and emergency preparedness. They must also pass a rigorous physical fitness test in order to graduate.

The WDOC Training Academy is located at the old armory building in Rawlins. In addition to the Training Manager, there are six full-time training lieutenants and an administrative assistant on staff. The Academy is offered four times throughout the year, with the next class scheduled for October 7-December 13, 2013
