A former corrections officer at New Jersey State Prison may withdraw his guilty plea for smuggling a cell phone to an imprisoned Bloods gang leader in 2008, prosecutors said today.

Brian Teel of Hamilton entered the plea in July in a deal that would have likely landed him a five-year prison sentence. He was scheduled for sentencing today but instead announced he would retain a new lawyer and consider motioning to withdraw his guilty plea, Deputy Attorney General Christopher Romanyshyn said.

Superior Court Judge Robert Billmeier will decide whether to accept Teel’s plea withdrawal in the coming months.

Teel allegedly smuggled a phone to Clarence Scott, the leader of the Paterson-based Nine Trey Hillside Beehive set of the Bloods street gang, the Attorney General’s office said. Teel was paid $500 to smuggle the phone to Scott, who continued to issue orders to gang members from his cell, the office said.
