NYPD touts success enforcing curfews, say several young offenders have been tossed back in jail |

There's a new way to keep criminals off Manhattan streets — enforcing their curfews. Patrol cops have been told to be on the lookout for young offenders who are out past their court-mandated bedtimes and to tip off prosecutors when they catch them. Several suspects who flouted the rules have already been tossed back in jail since the Manhattan district attorney’s office began coordinating with the NYPD. “We weren’t using curfew as effectively as we could,” David O’Keefe, head of the DA’s Crime Strategies Unit, told the Daily News. “We’re being more organized about it. Now we’re trying to bring police in the loop.” Curfews are nothing new. They bring to mind Officer Krupke hassling gang members in “West Side Story.” But officials say they are being imposed more often — as part of a bail package or a plea deal. When it happens, O’Keefe’s unit gives the defendant’s name to the NYPD’s Manhattan North or Manhattan South borough commands. The local precincts are notified and cops either do door-knocks or just keep an eye out for curfew busters.
