Prison phone calls show Bobby Ferguson still hiding assets, feds say

Convicted contractor Bobby Ferguson claims he’s broke and can’t afford a lawyer, but the federal government says it has fresh evidence that the friend of ex-Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick is still hiding assets.

At least that’s what Ferguson’s prison phone calls with a girlfriend indicate, according to court documents filed Thursday.

The government says that Ferguson, who is married, plotted with a girlfriend via prison phone calls in April to get money out of a safety deposit box in Alabama. At the same time, Ferguson was telling a federal judge he couldn’t afford a lawyer for a separate bid-rigging case, so the judge gave him a court-appointed attorney.

The government already has seized more than $2.2 million from Ferguson, including more than $400,000 in assets that were discovered after his March 11 conviction. Then came the April phone calls.

According to court records, federal agents listened to dozens of prison calls in which Ferguson used code names for his girlfriend and directed her to handle his financial affairs for him while he was in prison, including making payments for items like vehicles and gift cards for his family members.
