| Inmate kills clerk, self, prison officials say |

A prison clerk was assaulted and killed at the Connally Unit by an inmate who then took his own life, Texas Department of Criminal Justice officials said. Rhonda Osborne, who had worked for the department for just more than five years, was assaulted in a prison storage office about 5 p.m. Thursday. She was pronounced dead an hour later at Otto Kaiser Memorial Hospital in Karnes City. Osborne was 33. TDCJ spokesman Mike Viesca said inmate Gary Laskowski, who was serving a life sentence for two counts of aggravated sexual assault, attacked Osborne and then fatally injured himself with an unknown weapon. Laskowski had wounds to the wrists and neck. Viesca said it wasn't immediately known how Osborne died. The TDCJ's inspector general is investigating the attack. "Our hearts go out to Ms. Osborne's family and loved ones in this time of great tragedy," Gary Johnson, TDCJ executive director, said in a statement. "We are reminded that those who work in the field of criminal justice put their lives on the line every day, all in the interest of public safety and the betterment of our society. We will never forget Ms. Osborne's sacrifice." Viesca said Laskowski was working as a support service inmate. |
