A Calipatria State Prison inmate assaulted two correctional officers Saturday, according to a prison official.

Around 9:45 a.m., a correctional officer approached inmate Anthony J. Martin to escort him to a program office to speak with a sergeant, said Lt. Everardo Silva, prison administrative assistant and public information officer.

Martin turned and punched the officer in the face, knocking him to the ground, according to Silva. The inmate then picked up a metal chair and was standing over the officer when a second officer responded to help, Silva said.

Martin threw the metal chair at that officer, but he was soon subdued by responding staff and then placed in the prison’s administrative segregation unit pending investigation.

The officers were taken to an area hospital to be treated for their injuries.

The first officer, a 20-year veteran of the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, suffered a split upper lip and broken teeth, Silva said.

Some of his teeth are lodged in his upper palate, and he will need specialized surgery, Silva said.

The second officer, a 22-year veteran of CDCR, suffered bruising to his arms and legs from when the metal chair was thrown at him. Both officers are recovering at home.

Martin entered the CDCR system in July 1999 after being convicted for assault with a deadly weapon on a peace officer. He is serving an 11-year sentence.

He suffered injuries to his right fist during the Saturday assault and was treated at the prison.

The prison’s investigative services unit is investigating the incident, and it’s also being referred to the Imperial County District Attorney’s Office for review.
