An inmate who said he walked out of Dallas County Jail during the summer to get a cigarette was sentenced Monday to three years in state prison for his escape.

As part of a deal with prosecutors, Justin MacDonald, 30, pleaded guilty to a felony escape charge for his July 26 walkout. He had been jailed three days earlier for a probation violation.

MacDonald said in a jail interview that he was having a panic attack and mindlessly walked through open doors so he could smoke outside.

“At the time it happened, I might as well have been in a dream,” he said.

MacDonald said he passed guards as he made his way to an elevator and out the jail’s lobby doors. He said nobody said anything to him.

“I am still baffled to this day that I could get out,” he said. “If someone would’ve said, ‘Hey, what are you doing?’ I would have said, ‘I’m having a panic attack — could I see the psych ward?’”

A deputy found MacDonald standing outside the jail shirtless. He was still wearing inmate pants and said he took off the shirt because of the blistering summer heat.
