A maximum-security inmate at the Denver County (Colo.) Jail was stabbed repeatedly in his upper torso Sunday afternoon by another inmate who used a homemade "shank," sheriff's officials said. The injured inmate, jailed on burglary charges, was taken to Denver Health Medical Center. He was listed in stable condition, sheriff's spokesman Darryle Brown said. The assailant, who was being held on first-degree murder charges when the stabbing occurred, faces jail violations as well as possible criminal charges. No names were released Sunday. The incident occurred at about 2 p.m. in a common area and prompted a lockdown of the building. Brown said that deputies conduct random inspections of cell areas, looking for weapons. Investigators were still working to determine a motive. Authorities are worried that overcrowding at the jail could spark more violence. The jail, designed to house 1,350 inmates, currently holds 1,938, Brown said Sunday. Over the past eight weeks, the sheriff's office has released 160 nonviolent, misdemeanor offenders early, in an effort to alleviate the overcrowding, Brown said. Neither of the inmates involved in Sunday's violence qualified for early release. |
