The Department of Justice has joined the investigation into an incident that escalated to a patient being shot by a Plumas County Sheriff’s deputy.

According to a release from the Plumas County Sheriff’s Office, the deputy showed up to the Eastern Plumas Health Care hospital, off of 1st Avenue, around 12:48 a.m. Sunday to deal with a reportedly unruly patient causing some kind of disturbance.

At the hospital, the 53-year-old patient confronted the deputy – sparking a violent struggle that ended with the deputy opening fire on the patient.

The 53-year-old later died at the hospital. His identity is being withheld at this time.

Both the Department of Justice and the Plumas County District Attorney’s office are looking into the case. The deputy involved in the incident has been placed on paid administrative leave, per standard procedure.

The sheriff’s office notes that there have been “menacing” and “threatening” statements made to the local law enforcement community by unidentified members of Portola.

“This behavior is despicable and reflects very poorly on those individuals and should be discouraged,” the sheriff’s office noted in a release.
