Anthony Rinaldi, a former state corrections officer who stopped along Interstate 10 to surrender in the slaying of his wife, pleaded not guilty Thursday to first-degree murder. Phoenix police said Rinaldi shot his wife, 28-year-old Amanda Blaies-Rinaldi, during an argument Dec. 13 about 6:30 p.m. at the couple's family home in the 4600 block of East Piedmont Road, near 48th Street and Elliot Road. In a court filing, police said one of the couple's two children, both of whom were at home, called 911 to report the shooting. The suspect's 7-year-old stepson told 911 operators that "his mother and stepfather were in a physical fight, and he heard what he described as a 'boom, boom, boom' type of sound coming from the garage," the court document said. About two hours after the shooting, Rinaldi allegedly called police and said he shot his wife in the garage "due to the fact that he 'snapped' and his 'military training' kicked in," the court document stated. The suspect also said he left the boy and his 6-month-old son home alone and planned to commit suicide, the document said. The suspect hung up, but a dispatcher called him back. Rinaldi allegedly said that he was on I-10 behind a Department of Public Safety patrol car and that he would put his gun away. The court document said the DPS officer, Robert Hicks, told Phoenix police that Rinaldi parked behind him alongside the highway, then walked up to him and said, "You're going to want to put me in handcuffs, sir."
