| Corrections officers demonstrate in Moncton over wages |

About 70 corrections officers from across New Brunswick held an information picket in front of Moncton city hall on Tuesday morning over wages. CUPE spokesperson Cindy Welling says they are the lowest paid in Canada and are trying to get a new contract. "We are 29 months without a signed contract, we're 30 months without a wage increase and this is something that … we have been put in this situation numerous times in the past with negotiations," Welling told CBC News. She declined to reveal any details about how much the 600 corrections officers, who work at jails, are paid, but said it is less than even those in the neighbouring provinces. "If we look at just the Atlantic provinces alone, you know, we are certainly lower paid than everyone else around us." A provincial posting for a casual correctional officer lists a starting salary of $19 to $25 an hour. Read More. |
