Franklin County Jail overtime pay expected to hit $500,000 this year |

Franklin County is on track to pay its corrections officers a half million dollars in overtime this year. The county already has paid officers at the county jail more overtime this year than in all of 2012 or 2011, according to information Public Opinion requested through Pennsylvania's Right to Know Act. The bonus that the county offers union employees is not working. Both the union and the county have restated their perennial positions on overtime. The union wants more officers. The county says officers must be pulled unexpectedly from regular duty to transport duty, and other staff must fill in. On average, for every 40 hours on the job, a county corrections officer works more than four hours of overtime. Keen said the jail has had an increase in "operational requirements," such as taking inmates to the hospital or transporting state and federal inmates. A transport requires the presence of two officers. Low pay and double shifts drive away new hires, according to Jay Rich, president of Local 589 American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees. Read More. |
