A former corrections officer shot by two Onondaga County sheriff's deputies Tuesday night was pronounced dead at the scene in the town of Onondaga, Sheriff Kevin Walsh confirmed today. The man, Michael Sica, was shot by two deputies after he fired one shot then went into a garage at 5006 Aitchison Road, sat in a chair and pointed a gun at the deputies, sources familiar with the investigation told The Post-Standard. Sica's parents, who are in their 80s, called 911 before the shooting because they were in fear for their safety and his, Walsh said at a news conference. Sica's parents told 911 he was threatening to kill himself and shoot police, Walsh said. Sica, 57, was a former corrections officer at the Onondaga County Correctional Facility in Jamesville, Walsh said. An Onondaga County grand jury will investigate the shooting to determine whether the deputies were justified in using lethal force, District Attorney William Fitzpatrick said. The names of the two deputies will not become public until Friday, Walsh said. They were placed on paid administrative leave, he said. "They did what they were trained to do," Walsh said. The deputies met with a counselor Tuesday night, he said. Sica legally owned the pistol, Walsh said. Deputies are still investigating the rifles at the scene, but it appears Sica owned them, the sheriff said. Sica had a pistol and a rifle when deputies responded to the home at 5:50 p.m. Tuesday, sources have said.
