Florida wants to reopen prisons due to growing inmate population

The Department of Corrections closed seven prisons and four work camps back in July 2012, including two in the Bay area. This meant thousands of prisoners had to be moved to other institutions. At the time, with the crime rate steadily declining and prison admissions falling off, the statewide system had excess cell space.
