Corrections officer on duty during Billy Slagle's prison suicide resigns |

An Ohio corrections officer on duty when condemned killer Billy Slagle hanged himself in his Chillicothe Correctional Institution cell has resigned, according to the Department of Rehabilitation and Correction. Clay Putnam, 19, resigned Wednesday after a DRC review last month found he skipped rounds Aug. 4, the morning Slagle committed suicide. Putnam did not provide on his official resignation form a reason for walking away from the department, said DRC Spokeswoman JoEllen Smith. The DRC placed Putnam and fellow corrections officer John McCollister on administrative leave during its review of the suicide. Officials said McCollister falsified logs that showed Putnam regularly checked on Slagle’s cell during the shift. McCollister is still with the DRC, Smith said. Slagle was to be executed Aug. 7 for the 1987 murder of Cleveland neighbor Mari Ann Pope, whom he repeatedly stabbed with a pair of scissors in front of two child witnesses. Read More. |
