COLORADO - When Dave Cotten started with the Colorado Department of Corrections 25 years ago, men and women doing time in prison were called convicts. They’re now called offenders. This change in terminology is more than just semantics. It reflects a change in thinking about the role of prisons within society, a change that’s taken hold at the Buena Vista Correctional Complex. “The focus in the past was warehousing offenders,” Cotten said. “In the 25 years I’ve been in corrections, every year we focus more on rehabilitation.” Read More. |
