North Country corrections officer charged with defrauding the state

A Watertown corrections officer is facing felony charges after State Police accused him of providing phony information for an injury that he said occurred while he was on duty.

According to State Police, 51-year-old Steven Laplaca collected approximately $16,124 in workers compensation from New York State.

They said Laplaca provided false documentation about the incident.

Police said Laplaca was injured at the Watertown Correctional Facility on April 11, while he was responding to a personal alarm in the facility.

He returned to work on July 1.

Police charged him with Grand Larceny in the 3rd Degree, Falsifying Business Records in the 1st Degree, and Workers Compensation Fraud – all felonies.
