A Maricopa County detention officer is being honored this month by a nationwide organization that promotes safe working conditions for corrections officers across America.

Officer Rachel Harris received the 2013 American Correctional Officer Bronze Medal of Honor during the organization’s awards ceremony in Atlantic City, N.J., Friday, Nov. 8.

“We are proud that Officer Harris has been recognized by this national organization of her peers,” stated Sheriff Joe Arpaio in a prepared release. Ms. Harris was chosen from among thousands of nominees across the country.

During a cell search June 24 in the Lower Buckeye Jail facility, Ms. Harris was attacked by a male inmate who bit off a portion of her ear. A day later, having received medical treatment for her injury, Ms. Harris returned to the jail pod where the attacked occurred to thank the inmates and fellow officers who helped her during the incident. Sheriff Arpaio rewarded the inmates with pizza.

“She wanted to return to work right away, and that speaks well of her determination and grit,” said Mr. Arpaio in a prepared release.

The 2013 Correctional Medal of Honor Winners include the Medal of Honor, Gold Medal of Honor, Silver Medal of Honor, Bronze Medal of Honor, Meritorious Service and Life Saving awards. Additionally, 23 honorable-mention candidates are to be recognized.
