| Hershberger named corrections secretary of operations |

The Maryland Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services announced that Gregg Hershberger, a 31-year veteran who most recently served as executive director of its North Region, has assumed the role of deputy secretary of operations. “Gregg Hershberger has extensive experience within correctional facilities and is also capable of a seamless transition in overseeing our detention and community supervision operations,” said Gary Maynard, secretary of the department. Hershberger has broad experience in multiple areas of corrections, from case management to programs and services, and custody to emergency operations. He has served in roles as varied as classification counselor to warden, is a trained hostage negotiator and has taught at the Hagerstown Correctional Academy for more than 20 years. He recently served as warden of Roxbury Correctional Institution, a medium-security prison just south of Hagerstown. He was appointed executive director for the North Region in October and is now assuming the role of deputy secretary recently vacated by J. Michael Stouffer, who resigned from that position to become warden at RCI. Hershberger will report directly to the secretary and will oversee the department’s detention, correctional and community supervision operations. The executive directors of each of the department’s three regions will report directly to Hershberger. He will also directly oversee department security operations, the medical unit and programs and services to include case management and Maryland Correctional Enterprises. Hershberger first worked as a correctional officer in Chambersburg, Pa., after graduating from Elizabethtown College in 1976.
