Corrections officer honored for helping inmate |

Mario Figueroa risked his life protecting an inmate during a riot at the state prison on Wilmot. Now he's been recognized with the Silver Medal of Honor from the Arizona Department of Public Safety. The incident happened in September 2012, when more than 200 inmates got into a riot at the Santa Rita unit of the prison. Officer Figueroa observed a group of inmates assaulting an inmate and rushed in to protect him. Other inmates began to assault Officer Figueroa with broom handles.
