A former house of correction offers shelter for those down on their luck |

Ryan Eads believes one good turn deserves another. So she rolled up her sleeves and got busy helping to clean up and decorate the Decatur CARE Rescue Missions’ rehabilitated new home at 2175 E. Pershing Road, a former Illinois Department of Corrections work release center. The 19,000-square-foot building now holds living space for homeless men and the Grace House shelter for homeless women, including women with children. Eads, 23, is a resident and was busy giving conducted tours Sunday as Decatur CARE Rescue Missions staged an open house to thank all those who donated time and money to help get it ready. Eads, who has been sheltered by Grace since being released from prison Nov. 1, doesn’t mince words: “Grace House saved me,” she said. “They are helping me get my life back on track, and I wanted to help them.” Read More. |
