Macheal Price and Robin Longstreet are an unlikely pair whose lives intersected after one's prolonged drug addiction and the other's appreciation for Christian faith drew them together in Topeka. Price, shadowed by legal trouble borne of a methamphetamine addiction, is a recipient of the Mentoring 4 Success program launched by Gov. Sam Brownback to serve inmates held by the Kansas Department of Corrections. Longstreet, eager to share God's inspiration, is among mentors who stepped forward to help guide men and women navigating the transition to life outside prison. In accordance with the program's integration framework, these women began developing a bond months prior to Price's release in September and expect to remain allies after the typical 12- to 18-month collaboration period. "We hit it off right at the beginning," Price said. "She was real encouraging. I knew she was going to be my friend in the community. She was going to be the one who was going to get me there." Price's objective is to shed nearly two decades of drug abuse that, when times got difficult, drove her over the edge.
