Young drink-drivers have a shot at climbing away from bad behaviour on the road with the help of an educational initiative from the Department of Corrections. The New Plymouth probation service has teamed up with Roadsafe Taranaki and Rock Up North to help get the message across, with the assistance of an 8-metre rock wall. Climbing the wall helps users practise thinking ahead, concentrating, working with others and using restraint - all skills that promote safer driving, Roadsafe Taranaki representative Marion Webby said. "There aren't many opportunities for common educational messages. These guys have got their own lives to lead so it's quite hard." Roadsafe Taranaki has taken the climbing wall to A&P shows and schools and also want to target drivers between the ages of 15 and 25. "This is something outside of the box. You can't lecture them or a lot would switch off." Probation service manager Annette Perrett said the activity was beneficial to offenders on the Work and Living programme who had a go on Friday. She said participants were engaged, asking questions, commenting and making the connection between driving and climbing the wall. Around 80 people took part throughout the day in groups. Although participation was optional, most people gave it a go. "They get to the top and push that button. It's an amazing feeling," Miss Webby said. Read More. |
