Six inmates in Perry jail overdose

Six inmates inside an overcrowded Perry County, Ky., jail overdosed last weekend on prescription drugs that allegedly were smuggled into the facility by an inmate who had been on a medical furlough, Kentucky State Police said.
Four of the inmates were admitted to the Hazard Appalachian Regional Healthcare hospital, including one -- James Hudson, 24, of Haddix -- who was listed in critical condition yesterday, state police said.
Two inmates were treated and returned to jail.
Police said the suspect, whose name was not released, left the jail unescorted for medical treatment on Friday and brought back Xanax and methadone pills to the jail.
The Perry County jail, which opened two years ago, was built for 135 inmates, but was jammed with 244 Saturday. Court records show inmates are sometimes granted medical furloughs for drug treatment, but at times have returned to custody while high on drugs.
The overdose incidents were discovered at 5 a.m. Saturday. Jail officials said yesterday that quick action by deputy jailers, who administered CPR to some inmates, might have saved their lives.
Deputy Jailer Richard Dillon said overcrowded conditions in the jail make it almost impossible to keep drugs out of the jail, particularly when they have been allowed off the premises without escorts and bring back contraband inside body cavities.
The six inmates also were not the first to overdose while in custody, Dillon said.
He said inmates sometimes smuggle drugs in their anal cavity, which jailers are not allowed to search. "It's whenever someone keisters them that we can't find them, because the law prohibits us from looking for them," he said.
Police did not say where the suspect might have obtained the drugs.
