A special Des Moines police unit was successful in combating street violence this summer and fall, much of it likely gang-related, and will re-form at the first sign of another spike in violence, officials said. Since forming in 2011, the Special Enforcement Team has become a de facto gang unit for Des Moines police at a time when violent street activity has increased. However, a smaller gang presence and murkier link between gang and street activity have kept officials from reforming a dedicated gang squad. “We saw a significant amount of street activity and tried to get our arms around it,” Police Chief Judy Bradshaw said. “This year stood out in regard to shots and guns.” Read More. |
