Sheriff asks for two more officers |

Lee County Sheriff Jim Sholl asked the Lee County Board of Supervisors at the Tuesday workshop meeting to return two full-time correctional officer positions to his department. Sholl said that since an officer’s resignation in August 2003 and an officer’s retirement in December 2006 – neither of whom were replaced – the jail has been operating with 13 full-time and four part-time officers since. Scheduling is further complicated by the recent termination of a corrections officer following disciplinary procedure, Sholl said during the board’s regular meeting. Supervisors gave Sholl permission Tuesday to fill the position made vacant by the termination. Until the position is filled, Sholl will use full-time and part-time officers to fill gaps in the schedule. Over the past 10 years, inmate numbers have increased from a daily average of 44 to 60. With the jail expansion, inmate holding capacity has moved from 92 to 120. The Iowa Code requires the jail to maintain certain ratio of correctional officers to inmates, and to staff a female correctional officer on each shift in a 24/7 jail operation. “We have always struggled in limiting the part-time officers to working 30 hours per week,” Sholl said. “There are times when a part-time officer is working full-time hours and more, and earning overtime wages while a full-time officer is on leave.
