Former corrections officer charged with stealing inmate information

A 20-year veteran of the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office is facing a federal indictment.

Our news partner WOKV has obtained court records alleging former JSO corrections officer Harold Walbey III stole the personal information of at least eight inmates at Jacksonville's Pre-Trial Detention Facility and used that information to file false tax returns for profit.

The indictment claims between 2010 and May 2012, Walbey obtained personal information of the inmates, including name, date of birth and Social Security number without their knowledge or permission and outside of his normal duties.

Federal investigators say he would use that information to file fraudulent federal income tax returns from Jacksonville to the IRS Service Center in Pennsylvania. It further alleges he opened prepaid debit card accounts with the personal information and would put the fraudulent returns on to those cards.
