The Comanche County (Texas) Sheriff's Department is in mourning today after a deputy and his prisoner were killed in a car wreck. The department says 67-year-old sheriff's Lieutenant Robert Haley was bringing an inmate from Abilene to the Comanche County Jail yesterday when the crash happened. The Texas Department of Public Safety says Haley was driving east on State Highway 36 near Cross Plains when he veered onto the shoulder. The D-P-S says he overcorrected and veered into the opposing lane, where his car was hit by an S-U-V. Haley and his prisoner were dead at the scene. The Abilene Reporter-News reports the driver of the S-U-V -- 53-year-old David Ballew -- was treated at a hospital and released. Cross Plains is about 40 miles between Abilene and Comanche. |
