The California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation has announced it plans to hire some 7,000 correctional officers during the next three years, because of increases in retirements. With an estimated 1,800-plus officers retiring each year, the outflow has led to a greater -- and in some cases urgent -- need to fill peace officer positions statewide, according to a press release. New cadets are paid while attending the correctional officer academy and also earn health, dental and vision benefits and begin accumulating retirement credits, the release stated. Job requirements include a high school diploma; proof of U.S. citizenship; at least 20 years of age (must be 21 at time of appointment); passing a drug test screening; a proven history of law-abiding behavior; and the ability to legally own, possess and have custody or control of a firearm or other weapons. Potential candidates must also pass a written test, qualifications assessment, physical fitness test, vision screening, psychological evaluation, pre-employment medical examination and a background investigation.
