ACI relocating parole office, eyes space in downtown Providence |

The state Department of Corrections, which has leased space from the Urban League of Rhode Island for nearly six years for prisoners on parole and probation, has decided to leave the financially troubled nonprofit agency and move to a downtown location. A.T.Wall, director of the Adult Correctional Institutions complex in Cranston, said the agency’s lease with the Urban League is about to expire and he had concerns about the organization’s financial woes that were outlined last week in The Providence Journal. “We were aware that the building was for sale and we became aware that the Urban League was having some serious financial difficulties,” Wall said. On Tuesday, officials from the prison and Department of Administration will appear before the State Properties Committee and ask for a waiver on a formal request for proposals and initiate a lease agreement for office space at 40 Fountain St. Susan Lamkins, an ACI spokeswoman, said that the Corrections Department, since June 1, 2008, has leased space in the Urban League headquarters at 246 Prairie Ave. to oversee prisoners who have been released on parole and probation. As of Sept. 30, she said that there are 1,517 former prisoners supervised at the Urban League office and another 241 on “low supervision.” She said the Corrections Department pays $40,000 a year to rent the space.
