An inmate at an eastern Connecticut prison flirted briefly with freedom over the weekend before he was apprehended a short distance from the complex.
State prison officials said Chazz Booker, 22, of Stamford, walked away from the minimum security Bergin Correctional Institution in Storrs on Saturday after he was allowed to attend religious services there.
Staff members reported him missing about 9:30 p.m. and state police apprehended him about 15 minutes later near the prison.
Booker had served six weeks of an 18-month sentence for larceny. After the incident, he was transferred to the maximum-security Northern Correctional Institution in Somers. He faces new charges that could result in a longer prison sentence.
