Lakewood officials agree to pay increases for firefighters, paramedics and jailers

City firefighters, paramedics and corrections officers have negotiated pay increases in each of the next three years.

The increases come after the unions agreed to continue working under the terms of their old contracts without wage increases in 2013 because of city budget concerns. In return for 2 percent wage increases in 2014, 2015 and 2016, employees will assume a greater share of their health care costs in the form of increased premiums and deductibles.

Currently, employee-paid premiums are capped at $75 per month for single plans and $125 for family plans. By the end of 2016, employees' premiums will be capped at $125 for single plans and $180 for family plans. Employee paid deductibles will increase from $300 annually for single plans and $600 for family plans to $500 and $1,000 respectively.

"They're fair," Lakewood Mayor Michael Summers said of the new labor agreements. "They're affordable. They address key cost concerns and they create more flexibility to better serve our citizens. They're good agreements."

The agreements are with the Association of Firefighters Local 382, the Lakewood Paramedic Association, and the Ohio Patrolmen's Benevolent Association, Corrections Officers Unit.
