Officer Donya Martinez was honored as Correction Officer of the year at the Freeholders here last night.

The Division of Corrections in the county Department of Public Safety and Health Services recognizes an outstanding staff member each year, after officers are nominated by their peers.

Martinez joined the jail staff in June 2011 and graduated from the Somerset County Police Academy in December of that year.

Freeholder Director Rob Walton read aloud the reasons for her selection, noting that “her peers describe her as always willing to help, extremely reliable and dedicated to ensuring the safety of staff and inmates alike. She administers jail policy fairly and consistently."

She and her husband, Paul, have three daughters and one granddaughter. She has been an active volunteer with Hunterdon Hospice since 2003 and also volunteers with the Bridgewater Habitat for Humanity and the N.J. Ride Against AIDS. Her husband and one daughter were there to witness her being honored.

“Officer Martinez is commended for her commitment to public safety. Her service to the citizens of Hunterdon County reflects great credit upon herself and the Division of Corrections,” Walton continued.

Also on hand for the presentation were department Director George Wagner and Correctional Administrator John Paulmeno.
