Prison gardens donate record amount of produce |

The Missouri Department of Corrections announced that its Restorative Justice Garden Program has donated nearly 163 tons of fresh produce this year to local food pantries, shelters, churches, nursing homes and school districts throughout the state, shattering last year’s record of more than 117 tons. For many of the local food pantries, shelters and churches, the offender-grown produce is the only fresh produce that is available for those Missourians in need. Nursing homes and school districts also take donations from the institutions to incorporate the fresh fruit and vegetables into the meals for its residents and students. Farmington Correctional Center donated 31,523 pounds of food to Elvins Food Pantry and Farmington Ministerial Alliance. The Farmington Community Supervision Center donated 2,009 pounds of food to Ministerial Alliance Food Pantry, Elvins Food Pantry, Oaks Senior Center, St. Vincent DePaul Food Pantry, Farmington Children’s Hospital, Farmington Oaks Senior Center, and St. Francois County Board for the Developmentally Disabled. Potosi Correctional Center donated 15,668 pounds of food to Sayers Senior Center, Arcadia Valley Food Pantry, Madison County Good Bank, Rural Parish Workers of Christ the King, Potosi United Methodist Church Food Pantry, Signer Senior Center, Madison County Senior Center and Caledonia Food Pantry. The Eastern Reception, Diagnostic and Correctional Center in Bonne Terre donated 1,896 pounds of food to the SEMO Family Violence Council, Care for Kids, Elvins Food Pantry and the North County Early Education Center.
